Cole Farm Quilt "Churn Dash"

Barn Information

Quilt: Churn Dash

Owners:
Frank and Diana Cole
510 North Main Street
Stewartsville, NJ 08886

Farm History:

The house and barn were built in the mid-1700's by E. Hynshaw. This is one of a group of farms that were the first in Stewartsville.

The Cole's bought the farm in the late 1970's. At this point of time, the buildings were in deplorable condition after being neglected and empty for several years. The fields were rented to a local farmer and crops were grown.

They collect antiques and antique farm equipment - which is displayed all around the property. The current use of the barn is storage of all antiques and collectibles that are related to farming and the lost way of life on the farm.

It is their desire to preserve this property for future generations and show them the way of life as a farmer, and how the barn and equipment was used. The barn is a diamond; our state has lost too many, and their history should be preserved.

Barn History:

When the farm was purchased by the Coles, the roof on the barn was caved in and the walls were bowing outwards. The ridge of the barn was down 2 ft. on the front of the barn and close to 2 ft. on the back portion. A new roof was the first order of business.

Every night after work, Frank would jack up the structure and work on stabilizing the structure. Both portions of the barn were treated the same. Wood was only replaced where it was rotted or missing. The beams on the inside of the barn are original, constructed of large tree logs. The barn is pegged together and the tree logs were hand-huned and fitted into place.

The front portion of the barn is 200 years old; the rear portion is the oldest at 250 years old. The house is also 250 years old. This property also included a carriage house, out house, corn cribs; all the buildings that were used on a working farm. They have preserved all the wood and kept things as original as possible.
